EDEL 508 is a one-semester three-credit Masters's level course. It is designed for students of Master of Education specializing in English Language Teaching (ELT). The course consists of four modules―history of English critical traditions, the text and the author, the reader, and the culture and movements. The main objective of the course is to make the students aware of the theories of reading in the contemporary western world. The course is designed with a view to helping students who want to pursue their careers as English teachers in South Asian contexts. The course has been developed in such a way that the students will be able to handle the challenges of teaching different genres of English literature such as poetry, fiction, and drama in schools and colleges. 

Enabling Objectives:
  • offer a basic understanding of the 20th century philosophical and literary movements in the west;
  • orient students to different literary theories in teaching literature in schools and colleges:
  • enable students to interpret literary texts using the notions of philosophical and literary theories.
